Monthly Mix: DJZAYOKC

This diverse mix is a great one to zone out to. Ambient experimental and chill indie takes you into a dream while hip hop and harsh house smack you back into the real world.

“If you’re looking for an out of body audio experience, Click play and enjoy! This mix features music from Aphex Twins, Toro Y Moi, CECE PENISTON, and more.” -Isiah

Here’s a video to the live recording of the mix:

Monthly Mix: False Peaks

False Peaks in the pseudonym of one of our contributors, Chris Craighead. When not giving his opinion on the latest tunes, he’s blending house and lo-fi seamlessly to create a dreamy mix anyone would wanna study to.

“When I made this mix, I was going through a lot,” he said, “So the tracks are supposed to evoke a feeling of loss and nostalgia.”

Monthly Mix: Ologist

JD, aka Ologist, gave us a diverse all-vinyl mix. Breezy and brassy boogaloo, funk, and soul grace this one from Brazil and beyond. “This is a mix of records (yep, on vinyl) that have been in rotation around the studio recently,” he said, “So the mix is like a listening session of what you’d hear spinning on the turntable if you were chilling late night at my spot.” Peep the mix and eccentric tracklist below

Monthly Mix: Gabe Niles

We’re honored Gabe Niles took some time out of his busy schedule to grace us with this funk house mix. He’s always between VA and LA, either working with Sunny and Gabe or some of your favorite artists. He helped hometown hero D.R.A.M. hit it big and now perfecting beats for Eryka Badu and others alongside legendary hip-hop producer Rick Rubin. Enjoy this nice, long, danceable hour and a half narrated by DJ Sup Ladies himself.

Monthly Mix: Soup

AT THE START OF EVERY MONTH, WE’LL BE FEATURING A MIX OF SONGS FROM DJS, WHIPPED UP ESPECIALLY FOR POPSCURE

Lawyer by day and DJ whenever, Richard Luong has been with us in the earliest days of the blog, and was one of our first interviews. A veteran of the DJ scene, he spins old school motown alongside classic hip hop with plenty of obscure funk in between and offered a solely soulful mix this month. For this one he kept it pretty sultry, utilizing a lot of hip hop samples.

“This mix consists of songs that have been heavy in my rotation lately, that I thought went together well in that they showed the range of feelings that some one could feel about some one else who they love: longing, frustration, warmth, commitment, passion, appreciation, etc,” Soup said in his own words, “I also wanted to do something a little different from past mixes and include a lot of older music and derive everything from vinyl, but at the same time there are some fun hip hop samples in there, too (from Biggie to Outkast to Kanye to Mos Def to Big Daddy Kane). Hope you enjoy!”

Monthly Mix: Dj Gee

AT THE START OF EVERY MONTH, WE’LL BE FEATURING A MIX OF SONGS FROM DJS, WHIPPED UP ESPECIALLY FOR POPSCURE

DJ Gee gave us a taste of her project the Energy Lab, experimental mixes full of diverse tunes. This is her 6th one, blending hip hop, house, and much more. This is just a taste of what she spun for an hour and a half, filling in gaps during Soulflower so well it got everyone moving.

Monthly Mix: Davy Wreck

AT THE START OF EVERY MONTH, WE’LL BE FEATURING A MIX OF SONGS FROM DJS, WHIPPED UP ESPECIALLY FOR POPSCURE

Originally from Norfolk, Davy has lived all over the world and brings all his places into this mix. Time in Japan, his current home in New York, and everywhere in between influenced his blend of house and hip hop. When not turning tables he’s spinning on the floor as a b-boy, his mom’s dance therapy background flowing through his veins.

Get your blood pumping to this energetic mix that the man himself declares “This is the true Davy Wreck Style!”

Monthly Mix: FAKE UZUMI

EVERY MONTH, WE’LL BE FEATURING A MIX OF SONGS FROM DJS, WHIPPED UP ESPECIALLY FOR POPSCURE

Benji Uzumi has already been noticed by bigger outlets for his remixes and edits, but is still down to give our humble blog a taste of his unique, seamless blend. He’s already worked with pretty major artists like Opal as a producer, but still finds time to spin around town. He’s at GameWorks every Wednesday to soundtrack free adults-only arcading, and can be seen around town any given weekend.

This mix celebrates his hard work and could be considered an ode to other Virginian artists who work just as hard but still stay humble. Along with VA artists featured like Masego and N.E.R.D, Uzumi proves 757 stands against top hip hop and house music real well.
